Just off the Hampshire coast, the Isle of Wight is easy to reach with regular car and pedestrian ferry services to Ryde, Cowes, Fishbourne, and Yarmouth.
The island draws visitors now just as it drew Queen Victoria to her home-from-home, Osborne House. The island is a fantastic family option with the seaside resorts of Ryde, Shanklin, Ventnor and Alum. Close to the magnificent chalk towers of The Needles, Alum Bay is famed for its layers of multi-coloured sand.
There are great walking paths, Tennyson’s Trail, trodden by the poet himself running to The Needles. There is also a cycling path that circles the island.
Carisbrook is an imposing Norman castle, with loads of interesting things for kids to see and learn. There is also Quarr Abbey, a 12th century ruin near Ryde, and the remains of a Roman Villa in Brading.
The Isle of Wight is great for buckets and spades and, when the kids have had their fill of sand and sea, it packs all kinds of family fun and entertainment, including theme parks like The Needles Park and Blackgang Chine.
